Cubic Aromaticity: Fact or Fiction?

چکیده

Although silicon clusters (Sin) exhibit a diversity of 3-dimensional shapes, a cubic form has not been found to be stable in their small size of 8 Si atoms. While the cubane C8H8 is wellknown for chemists, the octasilacubane Si8H8 possessing a cubic structure has never been synthesized. Using quantum chemical computations we find that doping can lead to stable cubic silicon clusters such as Be@Si8, B@Si8, C@Si8... Analyses of phenomenological shell model (PSM) combined with partial electron localizability indicators (pELI-D) and atomic charges reveal three conditions for the existence of a cubic cluster, namely a full occupancy of electronic shells (34 electrons), the presence of a positive charge at the center, and a new type of spherical aromaticity. The aromaticity in these cubic systems stems from eight delocalizing electrons distributed on the outward sp lobes of Si atoms. The clusters of the heavier congeners Ge and Sn also have a comparable behaviour. Although the 8-electron cube systems feature a distinct type of spherical aromatic character, the question of interest is as to whether a “cubic aromaticity” is a fact of life.

Using Iron-Chelating Agents in Critically Ill Patients with Iron Overload. Fact or Fiction?

Recently, some evidence has shown that the failure of iron homeostasis may occur in critically ill patients and can lead to iron overload. Elevated ferritin levels as a body iron burden index in critically ill patients may be associated with depressed level of consciousness and greater mortality. However, the necessity of using iron-chelating agents in clinical situation is still unknown for th...

Local aromaticity of the six-membered rings in pyracylene. A difficult case for the NICS indicator of aromaticity.

In this work, we have analyzed the local aromaticity of the six-membered rings (6-MRs) of planar and pyramidalized pyracylene species through the structurally based harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity (HOMA), the electronically based para-delocalization index (PDI), and the magnetic-based nucleus independent chemical shift (NICS) measurements, as well as with maps of ring current density. ...

Why Aromaticity Is a Suspicious Concept? Why?

From time to time I have the opportunity to give lectures on topics related to aromaticity. Quite often in these occasions I get comments from the audience complaining about the fact that aromaticity is not a well-defined concept. My usual answer is that the most fruitful concepts in chemistry share the same lack of strict definition (Grunenberg, 2017). In one of these occasions, the comment wa...

Aromaticity in heterocyclic analogues of benzene: comprehensive analysis of structural aspects, electron delocalization and magnetic characteristics.

The degree of aromaticity of six-membered monoheterocycles with IV-VI group heteroatoms (C(6)H(5)X, where X = SiH, GeH, N, P, As, O(+), S(+), Se(+)) was analyzed using the results of ab initio calculations at the MP2/cc-pvtz level. Values of common aromaticity indices including those based on electronic delocalization properties, structural-dynamic features and magnetic properties all indicate ...
